A Sovereign God, A Corrupt Government, And Christian Duty
A Sovereign God
Ecclesiastes 7
Lamentations 3
Isaiah 45
Job 2
Proverbs 16
Proverbs 21
1 The king's heart is in the hand of the LORD, as the rivers of water: he turneth it whithersoever he will.
Psalm 24
1 (A Psalm of David.) The earth is the LORD'S, and the fulness thereof; the world, and they that dwell therein.
Psalm 103
Psalm 115
Romans 9
Daniel 2
20 Daniel answered and said, Blessed be the name of God for ever and ever: for wisdom and might are his:
A Corrupt Government
Ecclesiastes 3
16 And moreover I saw under the sun the place of judgment, that wickedness was there; and the place of righteousness, that iniquity was there.
Daniel 4
16 And moreover I saw under the sun the place of judgment, that wickedness was there; and the place of righteousness, that iniquity was there.
Ecclesiastes 5
Daniel 4
1 Nebuchadnezzar the king, unto all people, nations, and languages, that dwell in all the earth; Peace be multiplied unto you.
God, sovereign over the affairs of men puts the "basest" in charge for His own glory and pleasure. Has this concept changed since Nebuchadnezzar?
Christian Duty
The Apostle Peter advises us as "strangers" and "pilgrims" in the world and not as citizens.
1 Peter 2
15 For so is the will of God, that with well doing ye may put to silence the ignorance of foolish men:
Paul's letter to the Church in Corinth calls us ambassadors
2 Corinthians 5
Does an ambassador submit to the laws of the land he occupies? Yes
Does an ambassador have his identity in the land he occupies? Nope
The writer of Hebrews expresses:
Hebrews 11
"as in a strange country" though it wasn't unfamiliar to him at all but his citizenship and identity was now heavenly and no longer carnal.
Back to Paul in 2 Corinthians 6
Is political affiliation an unequal yoking?
Maybe we should re-phrase the question:
Identifying as a Democrat/Republican/Libertarian helps me preach the Gospel how?
Would political action be inappropriate for an ambassador?
Should sheep meddle in the affairs of goats?
Why can't we trust a sovereign God and tend to the things He has commanded us and leave the rest to Him? Shall not the judge of all the earth do right?
Genesis 18
How then shall we live?
Micah 6
2 Timothy 4
1 I charge thee therefore before God, and the Lord Jesus Christ, who shall judge the quick and the dead at his appearing and his kingdom;
Matthew 28
18 And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth.
Conclusion
God is sovereign, governments are corrupt, and Christians in politics are at best wasting their time and at worst disobedient to the commandments of Scripture.
Matthew 6
